Mamรก

Dear David and Leah,

It’s two in the morning and I’ve checked that everyone is sleeping. Right now my day as a mother is ending and yes, I am very tired. But I have decided to write you this letter and put it in your backpack so that tomorrow you can find it, read it slowly and try to understand me.

I need help. I am going to tell you what a normal day in my life is like, because I think you are not aware of it. I get up at half past six in the morning to shower and get ready, leaving the bathroom free for you.

Then I prepare everyone’s breakfast and the sandwiches they take to school. And to be very clear: I hate waking up so early and I’m always tired. Her father has already gone to the bank, having put the washing machine on beforehand, when you get up and see mother all dressed up and with everything ready. There is no magical fairy who did it: it was me.

I don’t expect you to thank me every day, but I do expect you to not complain about how tired you are when you wake up. I understand them very well. I know you have a long day at school, with your homework and problems, but I also have a very long day at the hospital, with a lot of work and problems that I try not to tell you about.

When we come home, we are ALL tired, but you wait for your lunch and go to your room to do your homework. I then have to pick up the laundry, empty the dishwasher and make dinner. And thanks to Dad doing the shopping and taking care of the dog. Yes, that dog that we bought for you and that you promised to walk and feed.

Later, at dinner time, not only do I not talk about my work, but I have to listen to their complaints because they don’t like what I cook, or because we don’t let them have their cell phones on the table. And they go back to their rooms to continue doing homework or chatting with their friends.

So I go to the computer to plan our vacations, to call the grandparents to see if they need anything, to iron, to clean, to think and organize the next day. I want them to think that since they are already teenagers and want their rights, they also have to think about their duties. And these are, first of all, helping at home, because the house belongs to everyone; and above all, try to understand their parents, who also have a job, their problems and obligations.

Think about everything I told you and I hope that this weekend we can talk as four mature people and make a plan of housework. I would like to hear a โ€œthank youโ€ from time to time, that there is something I am doing right, that the food is delicious or that it is nice to find ironed clothes on the bed.

I love you very much, but I am very tired.
Mum
